Apple Maps Introduces Look Around Feature to Enhance User Experience
Apple Maps enhances navigation with 'Look Around,' offering 360-degree views similar to Google Street View. Now available on the web app.

Apple has upgraded its Apple Maps service by adding a new ‘Look Around’ feature, which is reminiscent of Google’s Street View. This function allows users to view their surroundings in 360-degree panoramic views, enriching the overall mapping experience and making it easier to explore different locations.

Expansion of Features

The ‘Look Around’ feature was initially introduced in the iPhone app with iOS 13 and has now expanded to the Apple Maps web app. Users can activate this feature by clicking on the binoculars icon, which brings the web version in line with the mobile app. This update aims to provide a consistent user experience across various platforms, including Windows PCs, enhancing accessibility and usability for a broader audience.

Comparison with Google Street View

Google Street View, a part of Google Maps and Google Earth, has been offering interactive panoramas from numerous locations globally since its launch in 2007. Starting in the United States, it has expanded to include both urban and rural areas worldwide, providing users with extensive geographical coverage and exploration capabilities.

Current Limitations and Future Enhancements

While the Apple Maps web application remains in public beta, it includes several functionalities such as directions, point-of-interest and business search, map exploration, and guides. However, it currently lacks features such as 3D buildings, transit maps, and the ability to sign in with an Apple ID to access personalized features. Future updates are expected to introduce additional features, supported platforms, and languages. Apple has indicated plans to allow users to access saved locations by signing in with their Apple ID in upcoming releases.

The ‘Look Around’ feature in Apple Maps brings a more immersive and interactive experience to users, akin to Google Street View’s functionality. While the web application of Apple Maps is still evolving and currently lacks some features found in its mobile counterpart, the ongoing updates promise a richer and more cohesive user experience across all platforms. This enhancement is part of Apple’s broader strategy to improve its mapping services and expand its usability, making Apple Maps a more robust tool for navigation and exploration.
