In a significant stride toward making mobile artificial intelligence (AI) more inclusive and accessible, Samsung’s latest One UI 6.1 update has brought Galaxy AI to a broader audience with expanded language support. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, emphasized that this update marks only the beginning for Galaxy AI, aiming to reach over 100 million users by the end of 2024. This initiative not only pioneers a new era of mobile AI but also focuses on democratizing AI technology, making it accessible and beneficial for everyone.
The update is rich with features designed to enhance communication, boost productivity, and fuel creativity across the Galaxy ecosystem. Among these, notable enhancements include Chat Assist, which now offers message translation in 13 languages, and Live Translate, enabling voice and text translations during phone calls. For travelers, the Interpreter feature is a boon, offering real-time text translations for face-to-face conversations.
Despite the ambitious expansion, the Galaxy AI’s language support, powered by Samsung’s generative AI model Gauss, initially covers English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. This selection, while broad, falls short of the multilingual capabilities offered by competitors such as Google Assistant and Bixby, Samsung’s earlier AI assistant. The tech giant has signaled its intent to rapidly scale Gauss’s language support, leveraging the model to execute commands on-device to maintain privacy, with functionalities such as automatic audio and text translation during calls being highlighted for the Galaxy S24 lineup.
However, it’s important to note that while the Galaxy S24 and One UI 6.1 introduce several AI-driven features like live translations, transcription, document formatting, and summarization, these capabilities are currently limited to a select group of languages. For instance, live translations during phone calls support a more extensive list including Chinese, English (various dialects), French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai, and Vietnamese. Yet, not all features are available in every supported language, indicating a phased approach to language integration.
As Galaxy AI continues to evolve, the anticipation around its potential to redefine mobile AI experiences grows. Samsung’s commitment to expanding language support is not just a technical achievement but a move towards fostering a more connected and understanding global community.
