Galaxy S25 Ultra Poised to Outperform iPhone 16 Pro Max

The Galaxy S25 series is anticipated to be powered by cutting-edge 3nm chips. Depending on the region, certain models might utilize the Exynos 2500, while others could incorporate the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Notably, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, scheduled for unveiling in October 2024, could potentially empower the Galaxy S25 Ultra to surpass the iPhone 16 Pro Max in performance.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s Promising Performance

While the Galaxy S25 Ultra is expected to leverage the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip globally, the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+ might employ either the Exynos 2500 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, contingent on the region. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 recently surfaced in the Geekbench database, hinting at its potential to propel the Galaxy S25 Ultra beyond the iPhone 16 Pro Max in terms of performance.

Early benchmark results reveal that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, paired with 12GB RAM in a Qualcomm Reference Design, achieved scores of 2,884 in single-core and 8,840 in multi-core tests on Geekbench 6. These figures align with the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s performance, which typically hovers around 2,900 in single-core and 7,237 in multi-core tests. Notably, these scores represent a 35% enhancement in single-core and 30% in multi-core performance compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

It’s important to note that pre-release chipset testing often involves non-final software, potentially understating true capabilities. Consequently, by the time the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 reaches consumer devices with more than 12GB RAM, its CPU performance could see a substantial boost.

Galaxy S25 Ultra’s Competitive Edge

Given rumors that the iPhone 16 Pro series might not offer significant CPU performance gains over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4-equipped Galaxy S25 Ultra stands a good chance of matching or even outperforming the iPhone 16 Pro Max in this domain.

In the GPU arena, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 already surpasses the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 6-core GPU. Hence, the Adreno 830 GPU within the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is likely to maintain this advantage, potentially surpassing Apple’s forthcoming chip in graphics performance.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s Architecture

Reports suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 features two high-performance Oryon CPU cores clocked at 4.09GHz or higher and six power-efficient CPU cores clocked at 2.78GHz. Complemented by the Adreno 830 GPU with modern gaming features, this chipset is purportedly fabricated on TSMC’s 3nm process node (N3E or N3P).

Anticipated Galaxy S25 Ultra Features

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is projected to boast the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 For Galaxy chip, up to 16GB RAM, and up to 1TB of storage. Rumors suggest a revamped design with a more rounded back and a titanium frame. Additionally, it could house a 200MP primary rear camera, a 50MP ultrawide camera, and two 50MP telephoto cameras with 3x and 5x optical zoom, respectively.

Exynos 2500 for Select Markets

The Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+ might employ the Exynos 2500 chip in most markets. In a rare move, Samsung unveiled the chip’s name ahead of its launch. This 3nm chip, manufactured on Samsung Foundry’s second-generation 3nm process (SF3), is expected to feature one Cortex-X5 CPU core at 3.2GHz, three Cortex-A730 CPU cores at 2.3GHz, two additional Cortex-A730 cores, and four Cortex-A520 cores at 2.2GHz. It utilizes the RDNA-based Xclipse 950 GPU.
