GitHub, a global leader in software development, recently announced a significant update for its AI-enhanced coding assistant, GitHub Copilot, now accessible for free on Visual Studio Code (VS Code). This move aligns with the platform’s achievement of reaching 150 million developers worldwide.
Increased Activations in India and APAC
Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, revealed on the social platform X that the regions of India and the APAC have experienced a notable increase in Copilot activations following its integration into VS Code. The initiative offers a generous allotment of up to 2,000 code completions and 50 chat messages per month to users with either existing or newly created GitHub accounts.
Enhancements and Features
GitHub’s recent updates introduce users to a choice between two AI models within Copilot Free: Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet or OpenAI’s GPT-4o. This feature not only aids in addressing coding queries but also assists in code explanation, debugging, and the ability to perform edits across various files. Additionally, users can integrate third-party agents or develop their own extensions, further enhancing the functionality of Copilot.
Copilot Chat Integration
The launch of Copilot Chat directly from the GitHub dashboard marks another enhancement, streamlining access to the service for GitHub’s expansive developer base. Notably, specific groups such as students, educators, and open-source maintainers will retain free access to upgraded Copilot Pro accounts, ensuring sustained support for educational and open-source communities.
Commitment to the Indian Developer Ecosystem
Dohmke’s commitment to the Indian developer community was highlighted during his visit in June, where he predicted that India is poised to surpass the United States as the largest developer community on GitHub by 2027. In support of this growth, GitHub has partnered with Indian IT giant Infosys and inaugurated the first GitHub Center of Excellence in Infosys, Bengaluru. This initiative aims to nurture and support local developers, reinforcing GitHub’s dedication to fostering a robust developer ecosystem in the region.
