Google Maps is enhancing the user experience on both iPhones and WearOS smartwatches with a redesigned bottom bar and offline maps support, respectively.
iPhone Users, Say Hello to a Streamlined Bottom Bar
The Google Maps app on iPhone is getting a facelift with a cleaner bottom bar. Previously sporting five tabs, the new design trims this down to a more focused three. The “Go” tab has been seamlessly integrated into the renamed “You” tab, with its functionalities now accessible within the “Saved trips” list. The central tab, previously known as “Saved,” retains its bookmark icon but gets a new name: “You.” Additionally, it now houses new sections for “Notifications” and “Messages,” features previously found under the now-removed “Updates” tab. One notable change is the absence of a search bar on this redesigned “You” tab. This update aims to simplify navigation and declutter the interface, making it easier for users to access essential features. The new bottom bar is gradually rolling out with version 6.129.1 of the app. If you’ve updated but don’t see the changes yet, try force-closing the app and reopening it.
WearOS Smartwatches Embrace the Freedom of Offline Maps
In a move that will delight outdoor enthusiasts and travelers, Google Maps is expanding its offline maps support to WearOS smartwatches. This much-awaited feature empowers users to navigate without relying on a cellular or Wi-Fi connection, making it perfect for exploring areas with spotty network coverage or for conserving battery life on long journeys. Users can now conveniently download specific regions directly onto their smartwatches, ensuring uninterrupted access to maps even when offline.
These updates from Google underscore the company’s commitment to enhancing user experience across different platforms. The redesigned bottom bar on iPhones and the addition of offline maps on WearOS smartwatches are testament to Google’s continuous efforts to make navigation more intuitive and accessible for everyone.
