Google Photos to Detect and Label AI-Altered Images

Google Photos to Detect and Label AI-Altered Images
Google Photos adds AI detection to identify edited images. Learn how this new feature increases transparency and helps you spot AI alterations.

In an effort to increase transparency and combat the spread of misinformation, Google Photos will soon be updated with a feature that clearly labels images altered using AI tools like Magic Eraser. This move comes as AI-generated and AI-edited images become increasingly sophisticated, making it difficult to distinguish between authentic photos and those manipulated using technology.

Identifying AI Edits

Google acknowledges the challenge of identifying AI-edited images and is taking steps to address this issue. Google Photos will now include metadata indicating if an image has been modified using AI. This metadata, based on standards from the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), will be displayed in a new “AI info” section within the image details view. This section will be accessible both in the Google Photos app and on the web, appearing alongside other information like file name, location, and backup status.

How Edits Will Be Labeled

If an image has been edited using Google’s generative AI tools like Magic Editor or Zoom Enhance, the “AI info” section will feature a “Credit” section that reads “Edited with Google AI.” It’s important to note that this labeling will not be visible on the image itself, meaning that if the image is shared or uploaded elsewhere, there will be no indication of AI alteration.

Beyond Generative AI

The labeling feature will extend beyond images edited with generative AI tools. Google Photos will also use metadata to identify images composed of elements from multiple photos using non-generative features, such as the Pixel phone’s Best Take and Add Me functionalities. This comprehensive approach aims to provide users with a clearer understanding of how images may have been altered or generated using AI.

With this upcoming update, Google Photos aims to empower users to make informed decisions about the images they encounter and share. By providing clear labels for AI-edited content, the platform promotes transparency and helps combat the spread of misinformation. As AI technology continues to evolve, it’s crucial for platforms like Google Photos to prioritize ethical considerations and provide users with the tools they need to navigate the digital landscape responsibly.
