JioHotstar Domain Up for Grabs: Developer Sets Sights on Cambridge, Not Cash

Tech Savvy Developer Holds JioHotstar Domain
A Delhi techie secures the JioHotstar domain amidst the Disney-Jio merger buzz and proposes a unique deal to Reliance. Will they accept?

An app developer from Delhi has acquired the domain name “JioHotstar” in anticipation of the upcoming merger between JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. This strategic purchase has led the developer to make a unique offer to Reliance Industries, the parent company of JioCinema.

The JioHotstar Domain Name

The domain name JioHotstar currently redirects to a simple webpage with the message “JioHotstar: Best of Entertainment, Streaming Soon.” The page lacks any official branding or logos. However, it features a message from the Delhi techie addressed to Reliance Industries.

The Developer’s Proposal

In the message, the developer explains that they came across news of Disney+ Hotstar losing subscribers and the possibility of a merger with an Indian competitor. They hypothesized that Reliance Industries, through its subsidiary Viacom 18, would be the most likely acquirer. Drawing a parallel with Jio’s previous acquisition and rebranding of Saavn to JioSaavn, the developer anticipated the potential rebranding of Disney+ Hotstar to JioHotstar.

The developer has offered to sell the JioHotstar domain to Reliance in exchange for funding their dream of pursuing higher education at Cambridge University. They highlight their previous selection for the Cambridge University Accelerate program and their aspiration to pursue a full degree in entrepreneurship.

A Unique Ask

The developer believes that the acquisition cost would be a minor expense for a multi-billion dollar company like Reliance Industries, while the sale would be life-changing for them. They have requested Reliance to reach out with an official letter expressing their interest in purchasing the domain.

As of the time of this article, neither JioCinema nor Disney+ Hotstar has issued a statement regarding this matter.
