Apple has recently introduced a new iteration of its popular iPad mini, marking the first update to the device in three years. This 7th generation model boasts significant internal upgrades, most notably the inclusion of the A17 Pro chipset, previously seen in the iPhone 15 Pro series. This powerful chip enables the iPad mini to support Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI-driven features set to be released with the upcoming iPadOS 18.1 update. Despite these enhancements, Apple has managed to maintain a starting price similar to the previous generation, while also doubling the base storage.

Performance and Intelligence

The A17 Pro chipset delivers a substantial performance boost compared to the A15 chip found in the previous iPad mini. Users can expect a 30% increase in CPU performance, a 25% improvement in GPU performance, and a 2X faster neural engine. This translates to smoother multitasking, enhanced graphics in games, and improved efficiency for AI tasks. With the A17 Pro chip, the iPad mini is now capable of supporting hardware-based ray tracing and running demanding AAA games. Furthermore, the inclusion of Apple Intelligence promises to revolutionize user experience with features like Image Playground and Writing Tools, though the full capabilities remain to be seen upon the release of iPadOS 18.1.

Enhanced Features and Specifications

RAM and Storage: To support Apple Intelligence and demanding applications, the new iPad mini is expected to feature 8GB of RAM. Storage options have also been upgraded, with the base model now offering 128GB (double the previous generation’s 64GB), a more affordable 256GB option, and a new 512GB variant for users requiring ample space.
Connectivity: Staying current with the latest standards, the iPad mini now supports WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. An optional cellular variant with an eSIM is also available. Data transfer speeds get a boost with a 2X faster USB-C port capable of 10Gbps transfers.
Cameras: While the camera placement remains in portrait orientation, the 12MP main camera now features Smart HDR 4 for improved image quality and can record videos in 4K at 60FPS. The 12MP ultrawide front camera supports Center Stage for video calls and can record 1080P video at 30FPS.
Display: The iPad mini retains the familiar 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display (2,266 x 1,488p resolution) with P3 wide color gamut, antireflective coating, and True Tone technology. It is also compatible with the new Apple Pencil Pro with Hover functionality.
Battery: Apple claims the new iPad mini can deliver up to 10 hours of battery life, similar to its predecessor.

Availability and Pricing

The new iPad mini is available in four colors: a new shade of blue (replacing pink), a lighter purple, and the continuing starlight and space gray. Pre-orders have commenced on Apple’s online store and with authorized retailers, with general availability and deliveries starting October 23rd.
