In anticipation of the upcoming IFA 2024 event in Berlin, Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core CPU. This new Snapdragon chipset offers a more affordable alternative to the company’s 10-core Arm-based laptop processors released earlier this year, while still utilizing the same 4nm process technology. The chipset boasts the same Oryon CPU cores found in other X series processors, enabling support for on-device artificial intelligence (AI) applications and features.
Key Features of the Snapdragon X Plus 8-Core
- Processing Power and Memory: The octa-core Snapdragon X Plus chipset features eight of Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU cores, a 30MB CPU cache, and support for up to 64GB of LPDDR5X RAM. The X1P-42-100 variant offers a peak clock speed of 3.2GHz and a 1.7 TFLOPS Adreno GPU, while the X1P-46-100 boasts a slightly higher 3.4GHz clock speed and a faster 2.1 TFLOPS GPU.
- Display and AI Capabilities: The Adreno GPU on the new Snapdragon X Plus 8-core processors supports up to three external displays at 4K resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU delivers an impressive 45 trillion operations per second (45 TOPS) for on-device AI features on compatible applications, matching the AI performance of Qualcomm’s pricier 12-core and 10-core processors.
- Storage, Camera, and Connectivity: Qualcomm has confirmed that the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chip supports PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD or UFS 4.0 storage. Devices equipped with this processor will also be capable of supporting up to 36-megapixel cameras with 4K HDR video capture through the company’s Spectra ISP. Furthermore, the Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF system on the processor enables support for mmWave and Sub-6GHz 5G networks with download speeds reaching up to 10Gbps. The Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 mobile connectivity system provides Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 support, and computers with this chipset can accommodate up to three USB 4.0 ports.
- Battery Life: Qualcomm asserts that the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chipset can deliver up to twice the battery life of its closest competitor, the Intel Core Ultra 7 155U processor. However, its performance compared to Apple’s energy-efficient M2 chip remains to be seen.
Availability of the Snapdragon X Plus 8-Core
Computers powered by the new Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chipset will be available for purchase starting today from OEMs such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon announced ahead of IFA 2024 that these laptops will have a starting price of Rs. 67,100.
