The ASUS ROG Phone series garnered significant attention this year with the ROG Phone 8, successfully shedding its “gaming-only” label and establishing itself as a well-rounded flagship. Now, rumors regarding its successor, the ROG Phone 9, are beginning to surface.
Upgraded Internals
A recent Weibo post by the reputable leaker Smart Pikachu has seemingly revealed some of the ROG Phone 9’s key specifications. As anticipated, the device is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s forthcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor, which is likely to be the driving force behind numerous Android flagships in 2025.
Display and Memory Enhancements
One particularly interesting aspect of the leak is the mention of an “upgraded” display. This could potentially mean a brighter panel, a higher resolution than the current FHD+ 165Hz screen on the ROG Phone 8 series, or possibly a combination of both. Additionally, the ROG Phone 9 might come with up to 24GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage, mirroring the ROG Phone 8’s highest storage configuration.
Charging and Certification
The Weibo post also includes a screenshot of what is purportedly a ROG Phone 9 listing on China’s 3C certification platform. This listing, identified by the model number “ASUSAI2501A,” suggests that the ROG Phone 9 will support 65W wired charging, which is once again in line with the ROG Phone 8.
Evolution, Not Revolution
Based on the current leaks, it seems that the ROG Phone 9 might not represent a groundbreaking advancement. This isn’t entirely surprising, considering the substantial transformation the ROG Phone series underwent this year. The ROG Phone 8 already boasts impressive specifications, and it appears the company’s focus for next year will be on refining the user experience rather than introducing radical changes.
Anticipated Launch Timeline
The ROG Phone 9 could launch in China before the end of 2024, adhering to a similar timeline as the ROG Phone 8. US availability is expected to follow sometime in the first quarter of 2025.
