With the 2024 flagship phone launches from tech giants like Apple and Google now complete, attention is turning to what 2025 holds for the smartphone market. Early predictions suggest that Samsung, with its Galaxy S25 series, may initially dominate. However, two potential “dark horse” contenders are emerging from the shadows: the iPhone SE 4 from Apple and the Google Pixel 9a. Both are anticipated to be upper mid-range devices, likely priced around the ₹50,000 mark, and they have the potential to disrupt the market significantly.
Flagship Features, Mid-Range Price
One of the most compelling reasons for this anticipation is the impressive value proposition these devices are expected to offer. Currently, to experience Apple’s top-tier performance, consumers need to shell out at least ₹79,900 for the iPhone 16. However, the iPhone SE 4, rumored to be equipped with the A18 chipset and 8GB of RAM, could deliver similar performance at a significantly lower price point. This could be a game-changer, potentially even impacting sales of the iPhone 16 itself, particularly in price-sensitive markets like India.
Similarly, the Google Pixel 9a is expected to feature the latest Tensor G4 SoC. While it may lack some of the Pixel 9 Pro’s exclusive features, its Gemini capabilities promise an AI-rich user experience that could rival, or even surpass, some flagship phones.
The Core Experience, Without the Premium
While flagship models like the iPhone 16 Pro and the Pixel 9 Pro boast features like 120Hz displays and triple camera setups, the iPhone SE series and Google’s A-series phones have consistently delivered a comparable core user experience at a fraction of the cost. The Pixel 8a, for instance, launched with the same Tensor G3 chipset as the Pixel 8 Pro, despite the latter costing twice as much. This trend of offering near-flagship performance with strategic trade-offs is likely to continue, making these devices highly attractive to consumers who prioritize value.
Clean and Current Software
Both the iPhone SE 4 and the Pixel 9a are expected to launch with the latest software versions: iOS 18 and Android 15, respectively. This means an ad-free, bloatware-free experience with a strong emphasis on security. In the ₹50,000 price segment, this focus on software quality could be a major selling point.
